Mathematics Made Real An Activity-based Workbook for Grade 5

Mathematics Made Real: An Activity-based Workbook for Grade Five is a series of books that have been developed to introduce students in grades 4-6 to the mathematical ideas, practices and philosophy outlined in the National Standards Curriculum (NSC). These books have now been extensively updated to:

• provide students with opportunities to complete tasks, projects and activities that develop their critical thinking, creative, collaboration and communication skills – the 4 C’s – and to ensure that they see connections among the STEM areas.
• address all topics and objectives in the NSC – including new topics such as sets, location and patterns
• focus students’ attention and teachers’ efforts in the discovery, exploration and development of concepts and not merely on methods and procedures
• provide students with the opportunities to develop and breakdown algorithms and standard procedures
• facilitate students’ exploration of concepts to discover important relationships
• develop students’ ability to think critically, by creating the framework for the inclusion of problem-solving tasks as a standard feature of the mathematics classroom.
